Basel or Bale? (Part I)

Basel is the 2nd largest city in Switzerland and where I went with a group of exchange students on Saturday. Referred to in French as Bale, we English speakers are perpetually confusing and confused by the double names.

We arrived by train to this rather international city. Above is the station and you can also see the public transportation system - green trams.

(Above) The bank of banks, ie, the Bank for International Settlements is located in Basel. So are the USB headquarters.

(Above & Below) Basel has a variety of fountains around the city, all of which provide safe drinking water.

(Above) As a member of the Harry Potter Generation, I was excited to find the mascot of the city to be a Basilisk. But the depiction here was less snake-like than I had imagined. Also note the symbol on the shield, another popular symbol in the city.

(Above & Below) Basel is located on the Rhein. There is also leisure boating and fishing on the river besides commercial import/export trade.

(Below) Following are a few photos from the town hall.

(Above & Below) Note the paintings which decorate the entire building.

(Above) A statue and more paintings from inside the courtyard.

(Above) I didn't notice this guy wasn't actually a statue until he started blowing bubbles. Convincing, eh?
