Bummin' around in Bern

Yesterday could have been just another Sunday but instead, I used my demi-tariff (gives me half price train tickets) and my voie 7 (free train after 7pm) cards and went with two friends to Bern.

The train-ride took about an hour. We saw plenty of snow-covered & hilly Swiss countryside as we rode North.
Bern is the capital of Switzerland. Above is the parliament building. Generally, I would say Valentine's Day was celebrated in a low-key sort of way, with surprising displays like this public ice-skating rink, covered in heart-shaped balloons and blaring American love songs.
There are a variety of fountains throughout the city. The one pictured above is called "Kindlifresser" or "Child-Devourer" and is probably the most 'whimsical'.

Above you'll see Lucas and me posing under the Zeitglockenturm clock.

Not sure if this is Bjork or Fin but the bear pit has been in Bern since the 16th century and bears are a common architectural decoration, shop logo, and mascot.

This German-speaking city is known for these unique covered arcades pictured above. Kind of like the original strip mall, they make shopping much more convenient even in nasty weather. Notice the "cellers"? They're actually more shops located in the basements.

Oh look - a Ginger in Bern! That's the Aare River behind me.

Then we decided to climb the Cathedral. For 4 Swiss francs, this is the view down.

This guy was decorating part of the Cathedral. Not sure which scripture the gun-wielding Swiss German is from...

Loved this museum - the Kunst (Fine Arts) Museum of Bern. Got to see a bunch of artists I've studied.

So then we had fondue for dinner. Ivan was a pro.
